GABRIEL MATHIEU DE CLIEU

Almost all the billions of coffee trees in Latin America, are derived from "the same source. A heavily guarded plant in the greenhouse garden ""Des""Planes de Louis XIV"". While other plants had already reached the world, " the most influential were the descendants of thia particular plant. The hotbed of this story is colored by romance and intrigue. It was brought to "the Island of Martinique ""Martinica"" in 1720 or 1723 by Captain Gabriel" Mathieu De Clieu, who won posession of the plant through an amorous liaison with a woman of good stead, who had access to the greenhouse through a doctor friend of the court.

Gabriel de Clieu, a young French naval officer, allegedly inspired by patriotic zeal to bring the plant to the island of Martinique, allowed France to become an independent country of high grain prices as quoted. The plant thrived in its new home and its descendants are the source of most of the world's coffees.

EXOTIC FRUIT COMPLEX

Coffee ia a very complex fruit. It takes between three and five years for the perfect combination of sun, shade and rain to achieve a bush of arabica coffee to produce its first ripe cherries, which contin two seeds and a green taht we know and value as coffee beans.

The coffee is grown and produced in coffee plantations, in particular between the Tropics of Cancer nad Capricorn (torrid zone). The best farms are typically in the high mountains, where coffee bushes thrive in a rich volcanic soil of nutrients. Higher latitudes also make coffee beans mature more slowly, giving them more depth and character.
